The 85 is one of EMGs first pickups and is the slightly more sophisticated and well rounded half of its famous brother, the 81. Featuring close aperture coils loaded with Alnico V magnets, the 85 is a powerful guitar pickup with exceptional tone and versatility. The Alnico magnets of this model provide a muscular growl and smooth lead tones enabling you to play everything from the blues to the most extreme metal. Although often used in the neck position, make no mistake, the EMG 85 sounds great as a bridge humbucker thanks to its exceptional smoothness and soul. This pickup pairs well with just about every other humbucker in our line and using our solderless system, it makes changing your tone easier than ever.

Perfect for the bridge

bishop5150 /Reviewed 5/14/2014

I'm with many others on here and use the 85 in the bridge. It just sounds great. It has a nice warm and chunky thickness to it in the bridge. 81 is to shrill in the bridge for me but sounds great in the neck and lets the tone cut through. Highly recommend the 85 for the bridge. Have it in all my gigging guitars.

Perfect bridge pickup!

Shred Head /Reviewed 4/5/2014

First off I just want to say this is the best active bridge pickup period! I had the 81/81 in my ESP and decided to put the 85 in the neck and thought it was decent but I decided to switch the pickups to 85b/81n and was totally blown away! I'm in love! I don't like the 81 in the bridge to me it's to thin and sterile but in the neck it sounds great to me! If you want great tone I recommend the 85b/60n or 85b/81n.

Perfect bridge pickup!

Shred Head /Reviewed 4/5/2014

First off I just want to say this pickup in the bridge position is awesome! I bought a guitar a few months ago with the EMG 81/81 combo and didn't really like it so I sold the 81 from the neck and bought a used 85 in excellent condition. I put the 85 in the neck of my guitar and liked it but I still didn't like the tone from the 81 in the bridge. I decided to switch the pickups because the 85 is warmer and the 81 is brighter so I thought that would make more sense. I was totally blown away!! I will never put the 81 back in the bridge because it sounds to thin and sterile like most people say. The 85 is just so damn awesome and perfect and I don't think I'll ever use any other pickup in the bridge other than the EMG 85 period! I blame Zakk Wylde for the 85 being a popular neck pickup smh. If your wondering if you should get yourself the 81/85 combo DONT! Unless you put the 85 in the bridge and the 81 in the neck. My advice to people out there and I've been playing guitar for a long time is to either get the 85b/60n combo which I mostly prefer or the 85b/81n combo which I also like.

Don't try and sell me anything else

POW /Reviewed 3/22/2014

This pickup in the bridge position is where it's at. When I first tried EMG's I had it 81 at the bridge and 85 at the neck and hated it. Someone told me to flip it and I loved it. The 85 has the perfect punch at the bridge. I won't use anything else.

The Deus EX

If you use this pickups and ends up sounding bad, just throw your guitar away or yourself from the highest place possible. The 85 is pure tone for everything, a pickup made for musicians, not just for a specific style.

85 is great as a neck PU or a bridge PU

Big Bad Pete /Reviewed 12/3/2013

I try it in both positions and it is always great.
With the classic 81/85, I prefer to put the 81 in the neck to get some precision and the 85 in bridge for warmth.
Too many people still think that EMG are "cold" or "unnatural"... They just are different !
Distortion is magic, harmonics jump out of the pick so easily.
Clean tones are beautiful too.
