The 85X has an organic and open voice thanks to the added headroom and response known to all EMG X pickups. Featuring close aperture coils loaded with Alnico V magnets, the 85X is a powerful guitar pickup with exceptional tone and versatility. The Alnico magnets of this model provide a muscular growl and smooth lead tones enabling you to play everything from the blues to the most extreme metal. Although often used in the neck position, make no mistake, the EMG 85X sounds great as a bridge humbucker thanks to its exceptional smoothness and soul. This pickup pairs well with just about every other pickup in our line and using our solderless system, it makes changing your tone easier than ever.

Class Upgrade

Magilla1966 /Reviewed 7/20/2016

Project: Convert Schecter C-1 Elite with Passive Pickups to EMG-X Active Pickups

After removing all existing hardware, wiring, and pickups (egads, someone swapped out the OEM pickups for PRS Mark Tremonti Treble & Bass pickups), I installed the new pickup wiring in the guitar for the EMGs (wiring included with each pickup). Re-wiring was a snap - existing holes were already large enough that no adjustments were necessary. Existing control compartment easily housed all the new controls, excess wiring, and the new 9volt battery for the active pickup power.

Caveat - If you are using your old/existing switch - you MAY need to solder at least four wires to the switch; these wires connect to the EMG control block/buss that makes this a "solder-less" project. To make it a truly solder-less project, you would need the EMG 3-position toggle switch that sells for $28. Otherwise, EMG includes EVERYTHING else you need in the box with each pickup.

Easy install, very pleased with the 85-X.

This has turned a $200 guitar (an eBay deal) into a sexy $1,000 metal monster.

The Best. Period.

i paired this one, 85x with another active humbucker, the 89XR, in the custom hand carved guitar prototype i made for myself and they, both individually and paired, are clearly the very best pickups i have ever used, installed, heard, and are a dream to install. The plug size for the 85 is smaller and more compact than the plug for the 89XR, (the 89 has a plug which is double the size of the 85 because it is a dualmode pickup with extra leads so you have to be prepared to do some surgery if youre going to use a 89) but the 85 didnt require any dpecial treatment or extra surgery to the body to fit it. I highly recommend both and especially the 85. Its sound is MAGICAL and clear and havent found a single flaw in either one. 5 Stars out of 5.( if it were a 10/10 scale it would still be a 10.

Something new

Gianluca /Reviewed 3/17/2014

I loved the 85 before and this pickup has a more distinctive personality, like all x series devices. These pockups not only fill the gap between active and passive, also between humbucker and single coil sound I'd say. You can really play everything theough it. I paired it with a 60Ax in the bridge and it's a perfect match. Brilliant.
