...We have to make something unique and historic... It’s stealth, it’s sleek, it’s fast looking…

In early 2009, James Hetfield contacted EMG Pickups president Rob Turner and presented him with a challenge: to create a “stealth” looking set that captures the clarity and punch of a passive pickup and still retains the legendary active tone that molded a generation.

Now available in EMG Metal Works Finishes and EMG’s Solderless Installation System components, the JH Set consists of the JH-N (neck) and the JH-B (bridge). Both were patterned after the pickups James had used for 30 years, but the end result was a completely different animal. The JH-N has individual ceramic poles and bobbins that feature a larger core and are taller than the 60. This produces more attack, higher output, and fuller low end in the neck position. The JH-B uses the same type of core but has steel pole pieces, unlike the 81 that uses bar magnets. This produces the familiar tight attack with less inductance for a cleaner low end.

Metal Works consists of six stainless steel cap options for any of EMG's active or passive humbucker pickups. These U.S.A made caps are available in Gold, Chrome, Brushed Gold, Brushed Chrome, and Brushed Black Chrome. These striking new designs offer players and instrument builders a broader range of premium cap options. All the power and clarity of EMG electronics, now with a modern classic look.

Wonderful upgrade!

TSC90 /Reviewed 9/23/2019

I have had many pickups over the years by various different companies. Yet, EMG has not disappointed me with these. I was told by a friend to buy these because they superior to the 81/60 set many 81/85 combination. So... I decided it was worth the gamble. I installed them in my Les Paul. Man talk about a tremendous difference both in power, volume, tone but in clarity and punch to each note and string. This is a set worth for every guitar. Not because of it just James Hetfield, but because the set itself is a monstrous creation for any player seeking metal tones. FYI..If you plan to go solderless, make sure you buy all the parts you need and the exactly. Also, making installation easier is to gut the guitar out the day before so you can install it with everything out and it makes the process so much quicker. If your guitar did not come with a 9 volt, but stock, buy a 9 volt housing for your guitar. Enjoy them!!!

The first '' Real '' signature pickups

Johnrock /Reviewed 8/23/2019

In fact, we have seen in the past Set Signature of some guitarists but its limited to existing pickups like the Zack Wilde Set which are nothing but 81/85 with pots a little longer. But the '' Het Set '' is really the first one designed for and with the guitarist in question. Hetfield wanted almost the impossible but EMG succeeded. Do not forget that James Hetfield is considered one of the most precise Rhythm Guitar of all time. Giving a pair of new generation pickups. On the sound side, imagine an EMG 81 mixer with a Gibson 500T for the Bridge and a 60 with a 496R for the Neck. The punch and the warm sound of the passive but with the precision cut with the knife of the active one. With individual poles for each string and a larger core. Output side, it's good to have to lower the gain to have the same as 81/60. What to ask for better. All the best things in the world of pickups in a single pair of humbuckers ...!

cool but sad

Jaymz /Reviewed 5/3/2019

Didn't really want "Het" set, normally use a 85b/81n, salesman sold me to try, cool to install, looks great in my V, extremely shocked but the sound and volume pump, I just strummed the strings in clean and was "whoa!" Add the gain and BOOM, just full on low end, neck sounded great as well, dig the glass like tone when ripping on the highs, set cost me $339, now what pisses me off is "James" has $$ and these could be $60 cheaper or same price as KFK set. Otherwise a strong contender for the classic 81/85.,

Fantastic

Anders /Reviewed 4/23/2019

These pickups are friggin awesome. Great cleans and distorted. I play rock, metal and blues and they are fantastic for all styles really. The installation is so easy. I'm really mind-blown as to why other pickup manufacturers haven't made this solderless installation.
I don't think I will buy other pickups then emg's in the future

Imagine if they made an 81, which is incredible as is, even better. Well, they did, and the JH set is it.

Great pickups with and amazing range of tone be it clean or distorted. Definitely gonna go in every guitar I buy.

Ruda /Reviewed 7/20/2018

These pickups are amazing. I love the dynamics I can get from them be it clean or distorted. James has been my biggest influence in the way I play guitar and is actually the reason I started playing. So when I found out he had a signature pickup I knew I had to get it. These pickups are gonna be my go to from now on whenever I buy a guitar.

OK pickups

Nick /Reviewed 3/18/2018

Real tale of two cities, these pickups.
The bridge pickup is useless for anything except high gain at which it's clear, defined and punchy. Conversely the neck pickup is probably the best sounding humbucker I've heard for a clean humbucker sound, yet doesn't work at all well in the bridge position.
Good for what they do. If you're going to roar on the bridge and play clean on the neck, they're a great set.

Amazing Pickups

Dan /Reviewed 7/23/2017

I absolutely love these pickups, the Het Set is my new standard. In addition, EMG is my standard and will turn to EMG for any of my guitars from now on. Anyone looking for great warm passive combined with a tight active pickups, seriously look no further! Their customer service is top notch, especially James Kearney when I had a shipping address issue.
EMG you guys are amazing and will always turn to you for my pickup needs.
