...We have to make something unique and historic... It’s stealth, it’s sleek, it’s fast looking…

In early 2009, James Hetfield contacted EMG Pickups president Rob Turner and presented him with a challenge: to create a “stealth” looking set that captures the clarity and punch of a passive pickup and still retains the legendary active tone that molded a generation.

Now available in EMG Metal Works Finishes and EMG’s Solderless Installation System components, the JH Set consists of the JH-N (neck) and the JH-B (bridge). Both were patterned after the pickups James had used for 30 years, but the end result was a completely different animal. The JH-N has individual ceramic poles and bobbins that feature a larger core and are taller than the 60. This produces more attack, higher output, and fuller low end in the neck position. The JH-B uses the same type of core but has steel pole pieces, unlike the 81 that uses bar magnets. This produces the familiar tight attack with less inductance for a cleaner low end.

Metal Works consists of six stainless steel cap options for any of EMG's active or passive humbucker pickups. These U.S.A made caps are available in Gold, Chrome, Brushed Gold, Brushed Chrome, and Brushed Black Chrome. These striking new designs offer players and instrument builders a broader range of premium cap options. All the power and clarity of EMG electronics, now with a modern classic look.

Great Pickups, Should Make 7 String Version

Legions Of Raum /Reviewed 12/18/2015

I recently installed these in one of my guitars (Schecter SLS C-1) and and really dig the tone i get from these pickups. It has that Active punch but also sounds passive in a way. I have been using EMG's pretty much since I started playing guitar and I like how consistent they are as well as how easy they are to install with the solderless install kit. The only gripe I have is they don't make a 7 string version of this pickup set. The 57-7 and 66-7 is the closest match but I have tried that and while it is good, it doesn't provide that punch in the gut that a ceramic magnet pickup gives. For now I'll continue to use the 81-7x in my 7 strings but if they ever release a 7 string version of this pickup I would be all over it.

I recently bought the hetset from a local store to put into an explorer style guitar. My first thoughts were oh no I don't know how to do the wiring. The guy in the store said it's so easy my 10 yr old could do it. Well was very impressed with how EMG made it simple to install with no prior knowledge. Now for the sound WOW. I get amazing clean sounds and the distorted sounds are phenomenal. The best way to describe this set is you get the best of heaven and hell when it comes to the sound. The only thing I don't like is the price but well worth it. I now have hetset in all my electric guitars and will continue using them in every guitar I buy

Really good but.....

Okay look. James Hetfield was looking for pickups that retained the warmness and bite of an active pickup, but still had the punchiness of a passive pickup. Now, I got the chance to play the pickups in an ESP eclipse, and then play the 57/66 n the same guitar. Indeed the Het set has a little more punch to it, but it was almost sonically inaudible. If I were you, I would just get the 57/66 and save a little money. The "Het Set" is great, but the 57/66 is a better value.

Incredible!!!!

I recently purchased a 2014 ESP LTD Snakebyte... with the JH-Set pickups... WOW... amazing sound. These pickups sound simply amazing. I have 8 guitars and 2 basses with EMG Pickups. I don't regret upgrading them to EMG, I will eventually change ALL my pickups to EMG, except for my Gibson Les Paul's... But I'm entirely hooked on EMG pickups. If anyone asks me advice on upgrading pickups... I tell them to go EMG all the way... Active or Passive... whatever... EMG pickups Rock 'n Rule!!!!!

EZ Install & they GROWL !!!!

John /Reviewed 12/6/2014

I never installed pick-up before but am rather mechanical and not freaked out by tinkering in no mans land. Install took about an hour, mainly because the wiring diagram (instructions) are indeed that good. Plug and play. Easy.
Once done these make my 1998 Ibanez RG a mean-nasty-growly beast. Yep, I'm happy.

really the best of both worlds

joshua /Reviewed 11/18/2014

I reluctantly purchased the pickups because of a very respected knowledgable band member suggestion. He knew the tone I was looking for and also knew my hatred for the normal active PUs. I instantly fell in love with them before was using many different SD pickups as well as a set of 500t and none came close to the tone needed like the JH set.

I play on a Soldano Hot Rod in stereo with a Orange or80 through my hiwatt cabs and the JH set really pushes my amps into a different world. they are clear but gritty and tough sounding with every note resonating though.....I currently have them In my Japanese ESP eclipse custom shop.

My only complaint is that they only come as a set. I dont normally even put a neck PU in and dont want to spend 300 bucks just for the bridge pickup. that will be the only reason that I wont continue playing the Jh set because i cant afford to put them in each backup guitar. If they could sell them as a bridge only I would put one in every single guitar

If you use your neck PU this set as a whole is incredible and well worth the price
