Featuring two pickups in one, the 89 houses separate preamps and coils for a custom humbucker and single coil sound at your fingertips. Loaded with Alnico V magnets, the humbucker sound is rich, warm and powerful, but still clear and articulate, similar to the 85. The single coil mode, accessed via the included push pull pot, delivers the traditional Strat single coil sound: bright, airy, and chimey, and is very similar to the EMG SA. In either mode, the clean sound is gorgeously pristine and has a lot of presence. Used equally in bridge and neck positions. Whether you are playing hard rock or jazz, you can get it all with this beautifully balanced and versatile pickup.

EMG 89 - Love it!

Brian /Reviewed 12/23/2015

I had this pickup installed after playing Reb Beach's guitar. He has a Suhr with an 85 in the bridge. I loved the way that it responded and the tone of it was killer. My guitar builder, Kevin Butts with Killer B guitars, recommended the EMG 89. He told me that it was basically an 85 that was split able. He built this beautiful strat with the 89 and two SAs. I was blown away when I plugged it in. The 89 has got a wonderful tone. Every note picked is tracked wondefully. I love this pickup.

Home, finally

Daniele /Reviewed 5/11/2014

And... what a major leap forward! With the flick of a switch I can now range from metal to jazz via country and funk. That's the recipe where the 89/89R is combined to a 5-way selector switch that adds phase-reverse and series/parallel coil matching. Wow, it exceeded even my wildest expectations, and now I don't play any other guitar. I'll have to install the set on the others, too. True tone heaven and unlimited flexibility for experimenting new directions in sound!

Versatile

Solo /Reviewed 4/23/2014

I've had a pair of these in my custom Ibanez for a few years now. I can achieve the tone of Children of Bodom and clean it up for lessons or jazz playing in a moment. Like all EMGs there is no "1" setting on volume pots where the literal volume drops down, but if you know that going in they are fantastic and one of the best all-rounder pickups I have ever had

Super clean pickup when you split it in the neck I cant describe the amazing CRISP/CLEAR sound!! BUY IT

Haymes /Reviewed 2/14/2014

I didnt want emg's cuz you hear all the talk about unnatural sound, and how they all sound te same and batteries suck and clean is crap. Thats all BS!
1. I have this pickup in my ESP M2 Alder and Horizon Mohogany I can hear a clear difference in the way it works with the wood.
2. Switching battery is like once every 6 monjhs it taks 5 seconds.
3. This is the clearest and best pickup I have ever used SERIOUSLY. I have used evolutions, duncan JB, 59 and I can tell you when you split this thing in the neck position the warmth, and clarity will blow your mind.

Neutral but Dark

Adam Crow /Reviewed 12/8/2013

I've been using this pick up for 9 years now and its by far the most unique version that they offer. if your want versatility and a mid level pickup that'll bring a good clean and raunchy overkill with clarity. can't beat this model. some boutique amplifiers can't handle a normal 81, 85 setup but this works wonders. i play anything from Weezer to Metallica to 3 Doors Down straight to in flames or Dethklok and it covers it flawlessly. like Han Solo says "she may not look like much be she's got it where it counts, kid"
