Based off the popular EMG 81, the 81-7H utilizes powerful ceramic magnets and close aperture coils to produce a detailed tone with incredible amounts of high end cut, and fluid sustain. Traditionally used in the bridge position of your seven string guitar, this humbucker pickup will make your leads slice right through even the densest mix. When used in both neck and bridge positions the sound can only be described as blistering. Other recommended pairings include the classic 81-7H/85-7H setup and the versatile 81-7H/60-7H combo. EMG's solderless wiring makes installing your guitar pickups easier than ever.

Astounding Piece of Gear

Josh Polhill /Reviewed 2/16/2016

This is quite possibly the best performing, solidly built, intuitively designed, and overall most fearsome sounding bridge pickup that I've come to know through my time in the studio and on stage. From the standpoint of a producer/engineer, the 81 takes 1st prize in making it a walk in the park to achieve an aggressive, tight metal sound through almost any rig. Where most passive pickups seem to struggle to retain the fast response and clarity in the low end into large amounts of pre-amp gain, the 81 seems to brush it off with no problem - keeping the low end controlled, tight and percussive, with an amazing mid range growl and top end precision all the while. This pickup will make any guitar in which it housed a joy to play and capable of capturing a perfect, precise and tonally versatile metal sound - and of course, much more.

It's hard to believe that on top of all the sonic advantages of this monster, you are also freed of the drawbacks and frequently occurring problems that most people encounter when using outdated, traditional pickup designs. Namely, there is no noticeable degradation of clarity through a long lead or wireless system. This is of course due to the low impedance signal that the 81 provides, and also (at least for me) eliminates the need of a buffer unit to restore the lost signal when using a large effects board. As well as saying goodbye to any investment you are about to make on a buffer, it's your lucky day - you no longer have to rely on an expensive noise gate unit to keep the 60 cycle hum and such at bay. Why? Well, because there isn't any. Unless you are playing a huge festival with cranked amps, a dodgy sound system, sub-par lighting wiring and a inexperienced live sound engineer (God forbid), then practically any active pickup from the EMG line is silent all by itself.

Even if met with the unfortunate aforementioned situation, the 81 will be a dream to work with in regards to taming any background noise in the unlikely event that there will be any. Whereas, when in the same position on a guitar with traditional passives, it would be nigh on impossible to keeping the excessive hum at bay without interfering with the tone of the pickup itself due to the old design. Oh, and forget about not needing a noise gate when using traditional passives.

I could spend more time talking about how the EMGs are a life saver for my live and studio guitars, and how they are solid and reliable due to the apparent lack of exposed parts and ingenious solder-less wiring, but I presume you get the picture.

All I can say is that I am stoked about receiving my Aristides 070 fitted with the 81-7H/60-7H set, and look forward to once again hearing the sound that's been in my head ever since I tried my first ever EMG equipped guitar.
