EMG SI bought my pre-solderless set of EMG S Pickup set in 1985. I had been watching David Gilmour playing with Pink Floyd on the Delicaye Sound of Thunder Tour and I was trying to work out what pickups he was using and whilst watching the video I saw on a close up shot the letters EMG stamped on his pickups. There was no internet then and so after a few phone calls, I discovered a set of EMG pickups for a Strat in Cranes Music in Cardiff.
I jumped on a train and raced to the shop. 15 minutes later I was walking out of the shop with a box wrapped in a brown paper bag. I was 15 years old and never soldered in my life.
I got home and fitted the pickups whilst following the instructions and back then they didn’t have the solderless kits. Three hours later and a few burnt fingers I was screwing the scratchplate back on my guitar and readying a new set of strings.
Half an hour later I plugged my guitar in and played a chord.
Wow, the sound was amazing, so bright with a tight bottom end and sparkling mid range and the perfect Strat top end, perfectly balanced on every pick up I’d selected. There was no crackle, hum or buzz, just a perfect silence.
The sound was amazing, I had just started studying on a performing arts course in college and was in the middle of recording guitar parts on an original song for one of the drummers on the course.
I have used those pickups ever since and played all over Europe with them on over 1000 gigs. I have another Strat with EMG SA and a tappable 85. I won’t use anything else.

Made me love my stratI've had many strats but never loved them. I was getting ready to sell another one when I decided to give the s set a try. Now I can't stop playing it! No noise, clear and chimes like bell. Throw all the gain you want at it and it just keeps sounding great. It'll do country, blues, jazz and metal. I've tried so many pickups by other companies but none made me love my strat, until EMG!
