The 58X has a classic fat, round tone with plenty of output. Loaded with an Alnico magnet and two steel bars, the 58X is voiced similar to a P-90.

The X series preamp gives the pickup a more dynamic range along with increased headroom while keeping the more traditional string-to-string balance. X series pickups also come with an Active Tone Control (VLPF) designed to roll-off (attenuate) high frequencies, similar to a typical passive tone control. The result is a noiseless guitar pickup with a classic EMG sound that bridges the gap between active and passive.

Manufacturer's Note: Make sure to check the instructions for pickup measurements before purchasing to compare your existing pickups with EMG models.

All EMG Pickups are built to order. Estimated shipping is between 7-14 business days.

This has the biting edginess of an 81 and the big low end of the 85. A lot of so-called "modern metal" will probably still want a tight, very controlled low end, and there are plenty of humbuckers in the EMG catalog that could fit that bill. If you want something a little dirtier, though, for more old school varieties of death metal and black metal, you should get this!

OK, how many guitarists out there stuck at home with a soldering iron and spare pickups they’ve been curious to try out... ???
I managed a to source a hard to find 58X, paired oddly enough with a 57 bridge, in the brushed chrome cap. These were supposed to go into an HH Stratenstein of mine, but that’s stuck at my luthier’s shop in another town... So... how about the crappy old pups in my 1980’s Maison FA740D semi-acoustic? An hour to get everything off, and 10 minutes to rewire it with the plug & play EMGs...
The original pickups were dull and hollow sounding, more like an amplified plastic Maccaferri guitar & the bridge was unuseable. Now... the 58X at the neck is exactly as advertised, the cleanest punchiest jazz box sounds, sounds like Tuck Andress (well, Tuck if he’s drunk and forget how to play properly...), and through my Mesa Studio 22 plus (social distancing of loud valve amps) I can make it sound like Ted Nugent ticked off that he can’t get to his gun locker...
I’d previously had a 60X in one of my SGs, great but not into black covers or all chrome ones... and I have to say that the X preamps are consistently the most satisfying tactile experience after my 1972 Gibson embossed T-tops. The 57 in the bridge blends nicely in with the 58X, and though I had to re-EQ drastically, as it obviously sounded shrill with the EQ set for my other low output passive pups, I found settings that rival clean on my SGs and blow them away with any gain tossed in...
Not the right time to source a set of gold EMG right now, but hey, nobody going to complain about my brushed chrome pups on the gold hardware jazzbox until this quarantene is history...

I have this one, paired with a X85, and this is simply The best pickup ever. Thoroughly happy with both! Get them, or get left behind.
