The EMG JV52-HZ Set is a new passive vintage style pickup designed by EMG founder Rob Turner. The front/neck pickup has Alnico 5 pole magnets and the bridge pickup has Alnico 2 pole magnets making for one of the most unique J sets on the market. What makes this passive J set unique is how quiet it is. This is due to design with the coils being side by side creating a hum-canceling effect. The combination of The Alnico 5 and The Alnico 2 magnets make for very open rich harmonic sound, and welcomes a broad range of EQ. The JV52 will satisfy anyone looking for a noiseless early to late 70’s tone. Easy solderless installation, just plug and play!

A5 magnets get a lot of reviews but they also have some baggage that is associated with higher output covering up tonal possibilities. Which is why I wanted the A2, I would have settled for A2 neck and bridge but A2 on the bridge sounds very sweet, the A5 on the neck is complimentary. Crystal clear and responsive. This is my third or fourth set of EMG passive bass pickups I have installed in various instruments that have come through, and as always I am extremely pleased with the outcome.

I love the look and feel of my Squier 70's VM Jazz but thought the sound could be improved. I went with EMG after how impressed I was with the GZR P I installed in another bass.

Like the GZR's these JV52's are solderless and fairly easy to install so long as you pay attention to the details.

Once installed and height set these pickups sound amazing! Neck, bridge, fingers, pick, slap, all sound so much more open and responsive without being hi-fi and sterile. I play with flatwound strings and it's a really wonderful pairing.

I would prefer the alnico2 in the neck position and the alnico5 in the bridge position where there is less string energy.

Pros: Usual outstanding engineering by EMG, solderless connections are idiot-proof, super quiet as promised

Negatives: I have a bass loaded with Fender's Pure Vintage 74 pups, and I have played a number of 70s Jazzes. These EMGs deliver too round of a tone to my ears. The bridge pickup can't compete with the neck, and the trademark Jazz growl just isn't there. Sonically, a rare mis-fire by EMG for me.

These pickups have that nice, organic passive sound, and are noise free due to the split coil design. They're a breeze to install with the solderless quick connect system.
