The 85-7X is based on one of EMGs first pickups, the 85. Featuring close aperture coils loaded with Alnico V magnets, the 85-7X is a powerful seven string guitar pickup with exceptional tone and versatility. The Alnico magnets of this model provide a muscular growl and smooth lead tones, enabling you to play everything from the blues to the most extreme metal. Paired with the X series preamp, the 85-7X provides increased headroom, creating an organic and open voice that bridges the gap between passive and active pickups. Although often used in the neck position, make no mistake, the EMG 85-7X sounds great as a bridge pickup thanks to its exceptional smoothness and soul. This pickup pairs well with just about every other humbucker in our line and using our solderless system, it makes changing your tone easier than ever.

The X series preamp gives the pickup a more dynamic range along with increased headroom while keeping the more traditional string-to-string balance. X series pickups also come with an Active Tone Control (VLPF) designed to roll-off (attenuate) high frequencies, similar to a typical passive tone control. The result is a noiseless single coil guitar pickup with a classic EMG sound that bridges the gap between active and passive.

Manufacturer's Note: Make sure to check the instructions for pickup measurements before purchasing to compare your existing pickups with EMG models.

All EMG Pickups are built to order. Estimated shipping is between 7-14 business days.

As I was playing an 81-7 for 5 years on the bridge on my ESP 7 string guitar, I decided to replace it with 85-7x becase I have a Jackson 6 string with 85 on bridge and 81 on neck. The sound equalized with the Jackson and I got that growly hard sound with increased mids I want. 81 is too harsh for me on the bridge so I always use it on the neck when playing solo to cut through the mix. I would recommend this pickup to anyone who wishes to play with high gain amps, because it will overdrive your overdrive before your signal even comes to the amp.
