The Thunderbird is a classic body style and EMG offers direct replacement pickups for players looking to get more from their instrument. This dual mode pickup offers two unique tones. The single-coil mode is our JCS pickup built with ceramic and steel magnets for a rich, warm tone. The humbucker mode is our popular CS (ceramic steel) dual-coil for a big, aggressive sound with a pronounced mid-range. A push/pull volume (or tone) pot allows you to change from the rich clarity of a J pickup sound to the fatness of the CS humbucker.

When using two of TW Pickups in the same instrument it is not recommended that our BT or BQ Systems be used. Each pickup requires a push/pull pot for switching from single coil to humbucker, so the balance control included with the system can'’t be installed. If you want to use the balance control, consider switching single/dual coil outputs with a DPDT toggle switch(s) instead.

When using two TW Pickups in the same instrument each pickup requires a push/pull pot for switching from single coil to humbucker. If you want an alternative, consider switching single/dual coil outputs with a DPDT toggle switch(s) instead.

Manufacturer's Note: Make sure to check the instructions for pickup measurements before purchasing to compare your existing pickups with EMG models.

All EMG Pickups are built to order. Estimated shipping is between 7-14 business days.

I installed a single TBTW in my Gibson Les Paul DC Tribute Bass. HUGE difference in clarity without losing what makes the chunky Thunderbird sound so unique. The single coil mode is sweet too. Dead quiet! Wired as 9V. May try 18V down the line for fun. Couldn't be happier!

I installed the TBTW at the bridge on my EPI 5 string good growl on the dual coil mode with punchy lows in single. Push pull works effortlessly was able to go completely solderless using the pickup Buss that I didn’t order but EMG included knowing I would need it.

I installed a pair of TBTW's in my '05 Thunderbird and I'm thrilled with the results. The unique Thunderbird tone remains intact but the overall sonic quality has improved dramatically (I have 18 volts feeding these pups BTW, I routed an area under the pickguard for the battery location). It sounded like I was trying to cram my tone through a funnel with the stock pups, the muddy footprint is completely gone now, yet my tone is still unmistakably Gibson Thunderbird. I want to comment on the installation however, The EMG push/pull volume pot was not a good fit in the neck volume position. When installed, the back of the pot extended beyond the plane of the control cavity by a good 3mm. I could have left it like that if I didn't mind my control cover sitting cattywampus and looking like crap. I chose to countersink the hole in the bass body as much as I dared and fabricated a gasket for the cover to uniformly raise it so it would not contact the control. My cover looks good, but it now sits 2mm higher than the back of the bass. The modification is easy enough if your the handy type, but if not, beware, you may want to choose another EMG option without the push/pull switching.

Installed a set of these into a Newer Gibson BAEB Bass along with a BQC preamp. Cleaner, quieter, more versatile sound than the original pickups. Installed easily (except that I chose to route for some battery boxes plenty of room in the control cavity if you didn't want to). With push/pull on each pick and the 3 band pre this bass now covers all my needs. The original pickups sounded very good and had coil taps but really only had one sound and were prone to noise. Now I can get just about any sound I want and the bass is dead quiet. Which is a big deal for me. Now I just tweak my amp for the room and make adjustments onboard my bass. Makes things easier and lets me think about other things.

Has me considering another set without a pre-amp onmy Other BAEB4 with flats. Or maybe the TBP?

Anyway. I couldn't be happier with these pickups. Turned a good bass into a great one. Thanks EMG!
