Guitar virtuoso Marty Friedman relies on only the best of everything to deliver his unique one-of-a-kind guitar mastery. EMG had been part of this equation for the former Megadeth guitarist for years. EMG president and founder Rob Turner set out to develop a brand new passive signature set for Marty that delivered all of the dynamic response, power, punch and clarity that only EMG can. With alnico 5 magnets and a brand new recipe for winding the custom made bobbins, the result was exactly what Marty had been searching for. Available in Marty’s favorite brushed black chrome finish, these pickups look as deadly as they sound. “When I heard this pickup, I knew it was "the one" because it made me want to keep playing and never stop. This is my sound. I’m glad EMG took the time to get it right.

Very cool pups..

Starpoint /Reviewed 11/26/2018

Bought an old PRS Standard SE and installed these. These brought the guitar to life. Love the brushed black finish. This is my first set of EMG's, but won't be my last.

Favorite Pickups I've ever used!

AMAYA /Reviewed 11/4/2018

Got a set to replace some passive EMG-HZ 3's I had in a super strat of mine, and I was blown away by how much more hot these were. These things have alot of clarity and tightness, but in the neck position it's got a creamy body with a sharp attack peaking through the meat of the sound in the best way. I've never used a pickup that had such a wide volume range on it, it seems like I can got from 0-20 instead of 0-10 so there's alot of variation in the playability.

They're hot without overloading the front end of my gear somehow, I don't know how EMG pulled this off, but it's impressive!

Excellent Clarity and Punch

JEP /Reviewed 10/16/2018

Have had these swapped into a Les Paul-style (Mahogany body, Maple cap) custom shop for about 2 weeks now. I didn't do the install so my rating above in that category is just for good karma. They have the trademark clarity and precision of EMG's active sets but coupled with a more PAF-style warmth and nuance. They are incredibly responsive to pick attack and subtle playing dynamics. Played through a 100 watt Marshall and it's hard rock glory. Not sure these would be suitable for metal per-se, but they have incredible versatility for all styles right up to the true metal edge. Killer for soloing as well given their sparkling clarity and definition of individual notes. Definitely forces you to get your playing on point because these will expose you warts and all. EMG has definitely made a strong showing in the passive game with these. Highly recommended!

Amazing pups for the price

Chuck /Reviewed 9/15/2018

So I just re-wired and replaced the pickups in my 335 clone and I gotta say...wow!! What a HUGE difference these make in a SHB.

I gave the “ease of install” a 3 only because I was having to wire a hollow body...not a simple task and with the solderless harness, things were coming unplugged as I was was trying move components around in and out of the F hole.

In the end, with a little bit of patience, some string, and a few cuss words, it was all worth it. The guitar sounds like a million bucks!!

Components are solid, the pickups themselves are well made and completely sealed. Can’t go wrong for the price of a couple of badass humbuckers.

Versatile yet great sounding

Nick /Reviewed 2/14/2018

After using these pickups for a few months, I really love them. They clean up under distortion really well yet they can be extremely heavy sounding. When I look for pickups, I look for tight low end with a heavy focus in the mid range that have a bit of sharpness to them. These pickups fit the description perfectly.

The installation with the solderless system was easy although one problem I had was the length of the cable for the output jack. It was too short for my Flying V (Dean VMNT Peace Sells Edition). As a result, I had to buy a cable that was long enough. It would have been better if you included a longer cable for all guitars rather than a cable aimed at Marty Friedman's Jackson Monarkh Signature.

One thing I wish that you would do is be able to buy the pickups separately. I would LOVE to buy the bridge pickup and put it in my Fender Standard Strat (MIM) in the humbucker position. Even if you released an equivalent to this signature (tweak some of the EQ settings or something), it would be absolutely worth it.

Tied with the 57/66 set, this is in my opinion the BEST EMG pickup set. If anyone is looking for a passive equivalent to the EMG 57/66, PICK THESE UP. Despite these minuscule faults, I highly recommend you try these pickups.

Pros
+ Versatile for many genres
+ Great tone
+ Easy to install
+ Affordable compared to other signature EMG sets
+ Looks amazing

Cons
- Short Output Cable
- Medium output (can do really heavy stuff, but not that great for lower
tunings)

Final score: 9.5/10

Amazing set

Ben /Reviewed 7/5/2017

Just got these a week ago, installed in my Gibson Les Paul & LTD Bill Kelliher guitars. I've used the 57/66, 81/85, Duncan Hot Rodded set, various PAF pickups, these things are simply great. This could be the EMG answer for the almighty '59/JB set, not overly hot, extremely clear, clean up well, articulate, not muddy, responds to volume and pick attack! As Marty said, I just want to keep playing, get a set to try.

Not bad.

Devin /Reviewed 4/1/2017

Bought these to put in a Dean Zero I have. Been a fan of Marty for decades now and thought I'd give them a try. As far as I can tell, they're a JB/Jazz set rebranded. Good sound from them, but I'd hoped for something slightly different. Gonna do the retroactive series next and see how it sounds. Best I can say about these is they're pretty quiet under drive and the install was quick.
