Based on the original 707, the EMG 909X gives players all the tone and presence they demand in a 9 string guitar pickup with the added headroom of the X series preamp. The EMG 909X eliminates muddy low strings that often lack rich harmonic character and definition. Featuring Alnico V loaded, wide aperture coils, EMG beefs up the tone of the low strings while maintaining a balanced and articulate upper register. This, along with the X preamp, provides the responsive and dynamic control that nine string players love. This pickup will articulate every note, chord, and harmonic you ask of it. Used equally in the bridge and neck positions, the EMG 909X pickup will forever change how you hear and play your 9-string guitar. Solderless wiring makes installing the 909X easy to do on your own.

Okay, I wish the neck and bridge were voiced differently instead of the same pup twice

Ian Young /Reviewed 4/1/2019

Installed an Ibanez RGIF8 as stock.

They do sound more dynamic than a standard EMG but not as much as their latest stuff. These pickups are the right size to fit into fanned fret instruments, mine being an 8 string. However the pickup is voiced somewhere in between a bridge and neck pickup. I prefer an open A vowel sound in the bridge and a more closed O vowel sound in the neck. Kinda like a wah wah when it opens and closes so you have a variety of colour to choose from, just like how the human voice naturally operates. If you had a sustainer in the neck then a pickup somewhere in between is perfect in the bridge. I've never been a fan of the same pup twice especially on 24 fret instruments because of where the harmonics are. Sadly if EMG made a 55/67 (incredible pickups) in 9 string format it wouldn't work because of the pole pieces not lining up as this 909x has bars underneath the cover for this reason. Plus 9 string pickups are really expensive so just trying some out is not an option........ yet. With more multi scaled instruments comes a larger market, more options and competitive pricing. My fingers are crossed.

Amazing sound but a pain in the backside

Uncle Pƍwhiri /Reviewed 2/11/2019

While the pickup was well worth the money and it sounds incredible, it wasn't as easy as I expected to install. I had to drill into my guitar so that the pickup would fit because it was too big. Not only that, but I had to wait an additional week for a new output jack (that required soldering) because the one EMG sent was too short. I do look forward to playing with this pickup installed though.

Amazing!

Frank /Reviewed 4/26/2016

These pickups are very clear and articulate. There isn't too much volume or gain. There isn't an unnatural spike in the bass, mids, or treble. They can handle crushing rhythm, smooth leads, and chiming clean tones with ease. Pinch harmonics leap from the fretboard! To me, they're the best of both worlds between active and passive pickups. I've had them for over a year and they're still running on the same lithium battery, even though I play daily. My only complaint is that I wish they were available with metal covers and the other varied finishes of the rest of EMG's linup.
