The EMG Retro Active Fat 55 humbucker set was inspired by the ingenuity, tone, and feel of the original PAF, evoking the best tones of the 50’s and 60’s. No longer limited by the technology of that era, this classic looking humbucker set adds a newly designed external preamp that provides the benefit of a low-impedance output; virtually no hum or added noise. The Alnico magnets in traditional open coil bobbins deliver fat, warm lows without losing any clarity on the high end. The Fat 55 is capable of sitting back in a blues riff or rising up to the overdriven solo with ease. Staying true to conventional design can bring buzz and hum, which is where the new plug-on preamp comes in. The preamp cleans up all of the output noise but retains the passive character of your tone. This is a passive pickup with all the benefits of active technology, yielding a new level of tonal control. The completely solderless Retro Active Fat 55 humbucker set is available in black and zebra color options, giving you the look you love and the tone you need.

Absolutely Amazing Sound, Blew Away All Expectations

Bluesy /Reviewed 5/27/2019

I was completely skeptical about active pickups before putting these Fat 55's in my Les Paul Classic. Add to that, I'm not that guy who likes tinkering with electronics or anything like that. Which is why I was so completely blown away - the simplicity of installation, and the quality of the sound is nothing shy of amazing.

The increased width and depth of sound and tone makes if feel like my Volume and Tone knobs both now go to 20. In fact, I have such a broad pallet of tone to work with now, I haven't even made it off the neck pickup yet. Tones from jazz, to BB King, to Gary Moore & Peter Green. I can't wait to see how much more sound I can create, once I do start exploring the bridge and both pickups together.

I did have a hiccup during installation, where I had some clicking noises. I called Derrick in customer service, he had me email a couple of photos over and he told me how to fix it, immediately. Apparently I had plugged in one of my components (which are as easy to put together as legos), upside down.

Overall, great value, incredible - and I REALLY do mean incredible tone, zero inconvenience with a battery or installation. Looking forward to getting the strat set next. Dare I say "David Gilmour?"... Thanks EMG

Great sound

These are great pickups. In the past I've used 57/66, 81/60 and Gibson pickups. These are by far the best I've heard. Just so much clarity.

Best Pickups In the EMG Lineup

Heavy Metal Mater /Reviewed 3/6/2019

Just installed the zebra set in my Les Paul Prophecy EX and, wow! This is the best sounding set of pickups I have ever installed in a guitar! The clarity and gain structure is second to none. When playing clean, you can hear everything, all the way down to the pick impacting the strings, helping create a nicely percussive sound and giving you that clean tone you've been longing for.
Dirty, these pickups push you further into the territory of sonic, god-level, overdriven greatness!!! Pinch harmonics are much easier to attain and are supremely clear!
All-in-all, I'd say these pickups resemble a Hot-Rodded Duncan that was hot-rodded even further! I've found no style of music that these can't handle. Give em a shot. You won't regret it.

I installed them as an upgrade to the LP style kit. What a difference they made. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to upgrade their sound.

Great Tone, Beautiful to Look at.

Bob A Ganoush /Reviewed 7/3/2018

I purchased a Les Paul Type Iron Label Ibanez a few years back and loved the way the guitar played. I was however not in love with the excessive brightness of the 81/60 set in this guitar. So, I purchased a set of the Fat 55's in Zebra. Well, first these are the best looking pickups I have ever seen in a guitar. The quality and beauty is something else.
The tone is amazing, very punchy, meaty, creamy and clear! Very responsive pickups that are great for hard rock, jazz or anything in between. My Marshall and Vox amps have never sounded better!

Another Tool in My Kit

Morty56 /Reviewed 3/9/2018

I have a 2012 Gibson Les Paul Traditional that I put these into and it has transformed my tone into a vintage/modern monster! I have the ZW and Het sets that have I periodically run in this guitar before and each of those have their own unique sound and purpose (depending on the vibe I want to get.) I like these because it returns the guitar to more of a traditional LP sound but with the consistency and flexibility that comes with EMGs. Think of it like watching an old movie on BluRay that you had on VHS back in the day? Basically Angus Young/Jimmy Page/Billy Gibbons tones in High Definition. You get the vibe and response of PAFs but with better clarity. These things are just great. I highly recommend these for people looking to have a classic sound for blues/country but want the solderless system because you like to swap pickups often!

Glad I gave them a chance.

Bill /Reviewed 3/1/2018

I put these in a PRS SE Custom 24. Initially, I thought they were too bright but once I got them dialed in I began to really enjoy them. They seem to have all the vintage sounds of a good set of PAF's with the clarity and articulation of actives. They are clear as a bell but love overdrive, as most EMG's do, but aren't sterile when played clean which I've experienced with other active pups. They work very well with the volume and tone controls which is nice. I have actually started to use my tone control. I got the zebra set, parchment and black and they look very classy and expensive in the guitar. Workmanship is excellent and they are well packaged in an attractive box. I feel they are an excellent value and would not hesitate to buy again. I may try the others in the retroactive series. I'm glad they developed these.
