EMG along with legendary artist Geezer Butler have collaborated to develop the GZR-P and GZR-PJ signature bass pickup sets. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame bass player started working with EMG founder Rob Turner in 2011, looking to recreate the classic bass tones he had in Black Sabbath’s early days. As Geezer and Black Sabbath moved from studio to touring in 2013 the final component of getting the classic Geezer tone was in play - a passive pickup with a truly vintage tone an feel.
To recapture Geezer’s early Black Sabbath tone, it meant a new EMG vintage style passive P & PJ design with a few modern touches. The all solderless P set uses Alnico V pole pieces and custom wound coils for just the right amount of punch and grit. The J (PJ set) also uses Alnico 5 poles and features two custom wound split-coils. This eliminates the noise and hum usually associated with early 70’s bass pickups and allows for more power and volume than any other standard single coil J - creating a remarkable balance between the P and the J. The result is an unmistakable early Geezer Butler bass tone with deep, tight low end that you hear on tunes like “Iron Man,” “War Pigs,” and “Paranoid,” just like 1970’s. “I never felt comfortable giving my name to any other pickups, but this time these have blown me away.” - Geezer Butler

Precisely what my old lotus needed

Jnayls /Reviewed 3/10/2018

Went and bought a new bass to get some warm tones and wanted to spruce up my original Lotus from ‘95 to get that bright hard punchy bass. The Lotus had been using the original junky pickups for over 20 years, and for a little over a hundred bucks it got a new lease on life. I love playing it.

Installation was easy, with the caveat that I’m left handed and I was really hoping I could get used to the pots being backwards from what I’m used to. I keep going the wrong direction, and I thought these might be reversible but haven’t found anything yet.

My go to P Style passive pickup

James /Reviewed 8/12/2017

I've tried them all, and this was the sound I was looking for in a P style bass pickup. I've used EMG pickups in precisions since 1987, but this was the first passive set I tried from them. Wow, the installation is a breeze with the solderless connectors, and everything fell into place with plenty of room.

The sound is pure rock and roll bass. Everything from creamy 70's tones with flats and the tone rolled off a little, to the 80's piano sound with a pick and SS roundwounds, or today's argressive but manicured sounds. It's all there with this pickup set.

The pickup is tame with a midrange bump and tigh lows and little flat on top when played lightly. Where it truly shines is digging in a little and getting the growl that this pickup does so well. It retains it's low end, but the midrange growl, which is what so many of us love from a precision, is done perfectly. And I mean they nailed it. i play through an SVT CL into various cabs, and it just kills. It's perfect.

If you are on the fence and looking for a passive set of pickups for a p style application, give these a try. if you love the sound of a driven P bass without a thick muddy bottom, but retaining the beautiful midrange growl, these are your pickups.

Must have

Kyle /Reviewed 11/30/2014

After trying for years with different amp combinations and strings I finally decided to change out the pickup in my 1996 Fender '58 reissue with the GZR EMG and wow, what a sound, with much the same mid frequency as the Fender pickup but more controlled and a less boomy low end I can safely say it's the best P pickup I've ever used and am going to replace the stock Seymour Duncans in my Schecter model T with the GZR P/J set. Well done EMG

Finally

Patrick /Reviewed 11/9/2014

For the longest time I was searching for the perfect tone. I wasn't sure if it was the bass or amp that was giving me trouble. I happened to look on the EMG site and saw that Geezer was putting out at signature pickup. I said what the heck and ordered them. After I installed them and plugged in my bass and the sound that came out of my amp was the exact tone I have been looking for. I recommend these pickups to anyone looking for that classic P Bass tone and looking to install them yourself.

Classic

Paal /Reviewed 7/25/2014

As a fan of passive pickups and a big fan of Geezer i was very excited to try these pickups.
I replaced my bartollini P bass pickup I had in my Tokai Hardpuncher.I was very surprised over the sound these pickups can offer me. Beautiful classic mid bass sound and sounds very nice with Labella flats. When you turn down the tone control you get a very nice low end suitable for fat slow bass lines. I loved the easy install and its make its so much cleaner when you don't have to solder anything. I have now installed it on all my P basses.

Not paranoid. maybe NIB.

Nicholas /Reviewed 6/27/2014

Dont get me wrong very nice pup. but not quite the sound of the album paranoid. but more like black sabbath (1st album). Sounds too "clacky" to be paranoid.

Still love the pickup but maybe i need to roll back on the tone a tad.
Maybe i need the geezer rig to achieve the tone. Idk.

Over all fantastic tone just not quite as labeled.

I used an Ibanez gsr w master volume and acoustic amp with dadderrio strings.

Absolute Sound of Geezer!

Hollister /Reviewed 6/22/2014

These pickups are incredible! Had them installed in my Danelectro bass, and they sound amazing! To me, they capture the true style of Geezer Butler, and the punch-y feeling of these pickups are awesome, considering how sensitive these are for passive pickups. I just got done playing a show, and these pickups are so indescribably awesome! Great product!
