The PVA2 HZ pickup is based on the original EMG PHZ but utilizes Alnico 2 magnets instead of ceramic. This gives the PVA a warmer tone that has more vintage character. Because the PVA2 utilizes Alnico 2 magnets coupled with short, squat coils, the tone is warm, rich, and has less noise than most stock P bass pickups. For those who seek a warmer passive P pickup with a vintage look and tone, the PVA2 is a natural choice. Complete with EMG's solderless wiring control kit, this pickup is a breeze to install on your own.

These PVA2 HZ pickups are the third type of pickup that I have used from EMG. I use EMG pickups exclusively for upgrades. I put a pair of DC 45's in the extended-range bass and I had a pair of humbuckers for bass that I use in an old Carvin and those both performed flawlessly and sounded wonderful.

I acquired this P bass not too long ago and I wanted to upgrade a few things with it so I scanned the catalog. I wanted to get away from active pickups and keep this P bass passive as my other P bass hybrid. So, after doing some research on alnico pickups and the different options available I decided on alnico 5.
I could not be happier with the purity of sound that these render. The quality of the installation kit is wonderful, and easy to do. I do most my bass work on the kitchen table.

I cannot recommend these PVA2 HZ highly enough. I think the sound is exceptional, I think the tone is exceptional, and the ease of installation is exceptional,. I also like the option of the exposed pole pieces because it retains the look of an Off The Shelf P.

Nice warm pick ups

T /Reviewed 12/2/2018

Great warm pick ups! In my opinion they have a rounded and fuller tone, there is not as much “bite” as Alnico V but that’s why I grabbed them. Still plenty of presence, had an already “EQ’d” sound.
