The SPC or "Strat Presence Control" is often called the fat control. The original intent of the SPC was to allow guitar players to boost the midrange and volume of their single coil pickup to give it a sound similar to a humbucker. This is accomplished by boosting the gain in a broad mid-band fashion and reducing the highs as you turn the knob up. The result is a fatter, louder tone from any single coil pickup. It can also be used with a humbucker to increase your overall volume and midrange for a really fat tone that's great for slide guitar.

Singles need the SPC

pinto79 /Reviewed 8/23/2018

I have ben using the SPC control in a few of my guitars for a number of years now. One is a Strat with the DG20 set. It goes from sweet gentle cleans to all out rock with the tun of a knob. Another is in another Strat at has Duncan actives. They are glassy, clean and extremely loud. The SPC dials in a very Metal voice. It really needs to be experienced.
The this one I'm using is in an Ibanez Saber with a 60/S/S set. The 60 is powerful and loud, but the SPC dialled in gives it a little something extra in the output plus the mid focus. The result is a dark guitar that really cuts. I like it so much I'm considering mounting one in a Wah pedal enclosure so I can just have it on my pedalboard and add it to any guitar.

no Strat?

cuulGuit6r /Reviewed 7/25/2018

I first got an SPC on my 80's ESP Strat. Have changed to Les Pauls and Explorers a few years ago but I always use 2xEMG 89 on all of these - togehter with the SPC. This setup gives me loads of tones on one guitar: a Tele-ish single coil setup (single coils, SPC out), a P90 setup (single coils, SPC in), an LP setup (humbuckers, SPC out) and a metal setup (hb, SPC in) as well as any combination in between. I even use an SPC on my SG Junior with the original P90 PU; gives it good nuances in tones for practicing on a single channel amp. Recommend this to everybody. Helps me to procude the tones I need in perfect quality.

"Essential for the EMG SA set"

Ove /Reviewed 3/6/2017

I love the EMG SA set of Alnico V magnet based single coil pickups installed in a nice Fender Stratocaster. Why? No noise, no hum, no wimpy output, and better tone. The "SPC" added to the EMG SA set of single coils allows you to use the first tone control as a "Master Tone Knob" and the second tone knob with the EMG "SPC"installed allows you to get a really authentic and powerful mid-boost that really does make your bridge pickup sound like a true humbucker. I can't play a set of EMG SA's without it. It really is that good.

"A Must Have"

David P. Makowski /Reviewed 9/21/2016

I have been using the SPC with my Strat loaded EMG SA's which gives me an awesome lead tone. It's true. The SPC does, in fact, make your bridge pickup sound like a humbucker and the others as well but I use the bridge the most for solos. This SPC is a true must have.

SPC in custom lap steel

lox /Reviewed 9/4/2016

Used 1 SA and 1 P85 in a lap steel made from genuine mahogany.
Added the SPC for a little flexibility and very glad I did.
Just like it claims to, it fattens the sound nicely and produces some favorable overtones on sustained notes.
I tend to run it around 7-8.
Can't imagine not having this is any lap steel I would build, I would miss it terribly.

Wouldn't not use one.

bigtone23 /Reviewed 5/30/2014

I have had this installed with my SA Strat set for 20 years and on my T Tele set on and off for just as long. THE most useful control for adding versatility to your EMG 'single' coils. The boost and thickening is perfect for pushing the amp or your pedals a bit. Haven't tried one with passive pickups yet, but it's on the menu...

Usable transparent midboost with vintage PUs

bluesfendermanblues /Reviewed 2/21/2014

Have installed the SPC in two Fender Strats with PASSIVE single coil pick ups.
Kept the ordinary volume and tone controls (both 250K). Works great.Remember to ad a capacitor (500-1000pf) across the SPC input.in order to compensate for guitar cable. Much more usefull the the 25db Clapton Boost.
